Name: Alana Ranes
Location: Portland, OR
Styling: RISE OF THE WOMAN CROP || The piece I chose to style was the “Rise of the Woman” cropped t-shirt. As a female artist, I don’t feel that women are recognized as much as we should for the work we put out to the public. What better way to express those feelings than through clothing? The statement printed across the shirt is powerful, attention-grabbing, and overall encapsulates the mantra of Not A Basic Babe, which I love. I styled this look to fit the everyday, casual version of myself with a pair of ripped boyfriend jeans, pointed ankle booties, and a red flannel. Overall, I wanted this look to mirror what I interpret the Rise of the Woman to convey- fearlessness & resilience.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? I would describe my style as minimalistic with an edge. Some days I’ll be rocking some dark, ripped denim with a basic crop top, while other days I’ll throw on a sleek t-shirt dress with some heeled boots. I love piecing staple items with angular pieces and roughing it up a bit with mixed metal accessories.
WHAT DOES NOT A BASIC BABE MEAN TO YOU? Not A Basic Babe is someone who wakes up each morning with a vision, a plan, and takes action. She is honest and not afraid to express herself.
WHAT IS YOUR NOT A BASIC BABE ANTHEM? Currently, my NABB anthem is “Needed Me” by Rihanna. Actually, I’m enamored by her entire latest album, Anti.
WHO INSPIRES YOU? Artists inspire me. Whether it be visual, dance, or sonic, I draw inspiration from it all. I am a musician myself, so to experience art that an individual poured their heart into is something close to magic for me.
CELEBRITY YOU WOULD WANT TO BE A STYLIST FOR: There are a handful of celebrities I’d want to be a stylist for, although I’d have to name drop Zendaya or Kendall Jenner. They are the definition of badass, but still have class.
WHAT KEEPS YOU FEELING ON TOP OF YOUR GAME? Staying organized with a weekly planner, coffee, and winged eyeliner keeps me on my A-game.
IF YOU COULD TELL THE WORLD ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I’m a firm believer in using art as a vehicle for self-discovery and therapy. As cheesy as it may sound, I full heartedly live by it everyday whenever I play a show or simply pick up a guitar and write out what I need to say.
