How would you best describe your style?
Total hodgepodge and undefinable. My only consistent style elements are: black, high tops or boots and oversized t-shirts. Depending on the day that could mean a Kate Spade bag with a flannel or Converse with dresses. Oh and eyebrows - I’m convinced good eyebrows mean you can rock anything with confidence.
Jane Birkin or Olivia Palermo?
Jane Birkin all the way - she made “undone” look like perfection. I adore effortless style that is timeless but edgy at the same time.
If you could have any TV or movie character’s wardrobe, whose would you choose and why?
Winona Ryder in Reality Bites. I was 14 when that movie came out and I remember lusting over everything Winona - The choppy bob, muscle tees, boyfriend jeans, red lips. The whole deal is still so cool today.
What made you choose the LB piece you’re currently styling?
Well for one, I live in t-shirts! LB’s message of mothers being multifaceted as well as the lettering on this one is love for me because I’m a sucker for anything vintage inspired.
What’s in your bag?
Obviously baby shizz (diapers, wipes and Advil for my perpetually teething Ozzy), but in terms of mama shizz I always have the following items; if I forget these items I will 100% turn around and go home to retrieve said items: Burt’s Bee’s chapstick, my Hydroflask (I drink at least 100 oz of water a day and it has to be with tons of ice in my specific water bottle usually with fresh mint - insert eye roll to myself) and a bunch of snacks (I’m religious about eating every 2-3 hrs). Oh and my phone - because obviously…
What has been the best fashion/beauty advice you’ve received?
The best fashion and beauty advice I’ve ever received is from my mother. She would probably be shocked to hear this because she doesn’t really care for anything fashion or beauty related but that’s the magic of it all.
I have never seen my mother with make up. She has also never worn nail polish or hair dye in my lifetime. Without having to say a word - she taught me that being beautiful and confidant had little to do with what we put on our faces/bodies and more to do with loving ourselves from the inside out. While I do enjoy make up here and there, I feel just as good leaving the house barefaced (always SPF though) and I credit my mother for teaching me that we are beautiful as we are.
As far as fashion goes - my mother let me pick out my clothes from the time I could semi-dress myself. She encouraged my creativity and individuality from the start. Baby pictures show me in dresses that are too short and worn as tops. High water jeans or corduroy pants and tennis shoes completed most of my “looks.” I am convinced this fostered my love of fashion and not caring what others thought. Thank you mama!
How do you reset, recharge and keep feeling good as a mama?
I get out of the city! We go out to the desert as much as we can and it fills me up in a way that nothing else can. The quiet, the wind, a sky lit up with stars and the smell of creosote - it’s seriously all I need to feel like I can breathe again and conquer the world again. It seems to really center the entire family - the boys are calm and happiest in the warmth of the desert sun.
How has your style changed since becoming a mom?
I think my wardrobe has simplified a lot, but in a good way. I feel like I know myself so much more than I did before I was a mama and this manifests itself in many ways, including my personal style. I have “konmari’d” the shit out of my closet since having my last son and I find it to be so much easier to let go of things because a lot of it didn’t feel like “me” anymore. The bottom line - I know what I like and what looks good on me because I know who I AM now. No doubts, no fears - I just do what feels good.
Any tips for mamas juggling the demands of motherhood with the desire to still be stylish?
Don’t wait for an occasion to wear that cute new dress you bought - just rock that shit! Got a new pair of shoes but don’t consider it to be “Target run worthy?” Who cares! Today is the day for you to do you boo boo! I love yoga pants as much as the next mom/woman/human on earth but nothing feels better than putting on those jeans that fit you just right, putting on a bold lip and getting out! And if you’re a nursing mama like me - don’t be held down by trying to dress “nursing friendly” all the time! I used to always make sure I had an extra tank top underneath my clothes in case I had to nurse, but now I wear whatever I want and just pull it over my head if I need to - I’d much rather feel sassy and happy and let me belly hang out to nurse then to be held down by boring clothes that don’t make me feel like “me!”
